‘Your children could have died’: Vancouver officer scolds woman for leaving kids in hot car

Always call 911 if you see a pet or person in a locked hot car alone, even if you don’t think it’s hot.

A mother scolded by a police sergeant for leaving her two young children in a sweltering SUV while she shopped for groceries in Vancouver won’t face charges, but the case has been turned over to children’s services.

A video of the visibly upset officer yelling at the woman as she stood beside her Lexus in a parking lot surfaced online Thursday.

“You don’t seem to understand the danger you put your children in,” he said to the woman as she stood with her arms crossed. “The windows were up – it’s hot out. Your children could have died.”

The cop can be heard telling the woman that a fire truck, an ambulance, and two police cars were called to the scene as a result of her actions. The officer also threatened to have the woman’s kids taken into protective custody after she appeared to argue with him.

“You don’t seem to understand what you’ve done,” he said before adding later, “What kind of parent are you?”

Vancouver police Chief Adam Palmer told reporters Friday that the woman will not face charges but that the children’s ministry has been contacted. The children, a girl, 6, and a three-and-a-half-year-old boy, were left unattended for about 20 minutes while the mother shopped for groceries Monday afternoon, Palmer said.

Palmer said police received multiple 911 calls from citizens concerned about two children in distress left in a hot car. They arrived to find the car alarm going off.

The chief said the sergeant in the video is highly respected and has children of his own.

“He was trying to convey to that woman the seriousness of what she’d done with her children.”

In Edmonton, police announced a mother was charged after her baby had to be rescued from a hot car.

Police managed to get the eight-month-old girl out of the vehicle and she was sent to the hospital for treatment.

It was believed the infant was in the car for about 45 minutes on Thursday night. Her mother, 22, who told police she forgot the baby in the vehicle while meeting a friend for coffee, is charged with causing a child to be in need of intervention.

The inside of a previously air conditioned vehicle can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius in as little as 20 minutes of sitting in the summer sun, according to the Canada Safety Council. That’s well above the temperature for heat stroke.

Although there are no national statistics available in Canada, the U.S. reports that an average of 37 children die every year in hot cars, with the majority of them being under the age of three.

Vancouver police also cautioned pet owners against leaving their furry friends unattended inside parked vehicles after they were forced to break into a car to rescue a dog at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Park earlier this week.

“Our message is don’t leave your pets or your kids in your vehicle when the weather is so hot,” Const. Anne-Marie Clark told CTV Vancouver. “Children should go without saying. Please take your children with you. Don’t leave them in the car. It’s too hot for everyone, pets or people.”

Happy 150th Birthday Canada | Mr. Locksmith Mapleridge

www.mrlocksmith.com

On Saturday, July 1, 2017, it will be the sesquicentennial of Canada becoming a country, which occurred on July 1, 1867. On that day 3 British colonies – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Canada – were united into the Dominion of Canada. At the same time, that large existing Province of Canada was divided into two provinces – Ontario and Quebec. Canada started as a country of four provinces which eventually expanded West, East and North until it became what it is today; comprised of 10 provinces and 3 territories.

The last province to join Confederation was Newfoundland when the then Dominion of Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. The last territory to be created was Nunavut, which in 1999 was divided from the existing Northwest Territories.

On Saturday, we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation. I hope all Canadians, home and abroad are able to celebrate this milestone of our great nation.

Happy Birthday Canada!

Open Sentry Safes in Seconds | Mr. Locksmith Blog

Open Sentry Safes in Seconds | Mr. Locksmith Blog. For further info go to www.mrlocksmith.com/.

Both Electronic Sentry Safes look the same but different serial numbers. The first Sentry Safe is on the recall list and the second Sentry Safe is not on the recall list. Both appear to be exactly the same and both are vulnerable to rare earth magnets.

When I checked the serial numbers on the Sentry safe website, one safe the serial number starts with an “A” and is on the recall list. I called Sentry and they are sending me an upgrade kit.

Note: Three (3) weeks now and I still have not received the upgrade kit.

The second safes serial number starts with a B and the Sentry website states this safe is not on the recall list.

I do not see any difference externally. When I was on the Sentry Safe website with the “recalled” safe webpage I was linked to a webpage and the recall letters stated “a Canadian locksmith with a hockey puck rare earth magnet is occasionally opening up safes.” I open lots of Electronic safes with rare earth magnets and at Mr. Locksmith we open and repair most safe and many other locksmiths in North America.
Examining the solenoids on both safe after I opened them with the magnet they look exactly the same.

Now we’ll take out the inside panels and we’ll just take a look at each one. So when I compare these two safes everything looks the same. Solenoid, actually that solenoid is exactly … That’s that version the affected and the unaffected or the recalled and the non recalled. This one has a green dot, green dot. I don’t see any difference in the wiring, the construction, nothing so, this ones recalled, this ones not. A series recalled, B series not recalled but as you saw simple easy to open.

I will buy a brand new one of Electronic Sentry safes and test it and see what happens. Sentry states “A” is on the recall list and is potentially vulnerable to being opened with a magnet and ‘B”,is not recalled and not vulnerable?

Mr. Locksmith Voted Best Locksmith in Vancouver

Got a list of things you need to fix, change, upgrade? But don’t know where to start, or how to sort the experts from the charlatans? We’ve done the dirty work for you. We looked far and wide, asked customers and competitors, and tried out many of these enterprises ourselves. Here’s the inside track to the city’s miracle workers.

GOT PESTS?
Don’t know a pharoah ant from a bedbug? A roof rat from a house mouse? You only know you’ve got pests and need help? Canadian Pest Control is the local outfit that even its competitors say nice things about. They’re big enough-some three dozen people-to take on any job, and employees are certified, bonded, and insured. The only time you might have had a problem getting instant action was the recent weekend when the entire staff took off to attend a pest-management conference in Victoria. Canadian Pest Control, 84 North Bend St., Coquitlam, 604-873-2813. Canadianpest.com

DELINQUENT DOG?
Training a dog full of pent-up energy takes time and commitment. And the fact is, much destructive canine behaviour can be traced to lack of exercise. Which is why you need Candace and Ryan Herrod, dog walkers extraordinaire. Their motto is “Your way”—they interview you first, wanting to know your pet’s quirks, health concerns, and exactly how you’re training it. They conduct most walks one-on-one. They’re insured and bonded, and offer training and pet-sitting services as well, including live-in-a godsend when you’ve exhausted the goodwill of family and friends. West Coast Tails, 778-241-2287. Westcoasttails.com

CAR TROUBLE?
There’s no trouble like car trouble, and no drive as dispiriting as a schlep to some godforsaken auto mall. Which is why Tremblay Motors, under the Granville Bridge, is great for repairs, servicing, and Air Care work. Chief Tremblay opened the original shop in 1934 at Fourth and MacDonald, site of the first Chevron station in Canada; son Sam and grandson Brad carry on the tradition. They’ll fix any make or model, have a mechanic under the hood within a day or two, and speak in language you get. You’ll only end up on that auto mall schlep if your car has a recall or needs a repair under warranty. Tremblay Motors, 1505 W. Third Ave., 604-682-0044. Tremblaymotors.com

GOING SOMEWHERE?
Let’s face it: generally speaking, cab companies suck in this city. The one exception is MacLure’s, the favourite of virtually everyone we polled. Their dispatchers are sunny, and they call personally (no robo-voice) when your cab draws near. The drivers are seasoned but not bitter, and they won’t punish you for not carrying cash. Best of all, they usually arrive within five or 10 minutes of your call. MacLure’s Cabs,604-683-6666. Maclurescabs.ca

LOCKED OUT?
You’re screwed. 2 a.m., nobody’s home, your keys are gone. Terry Whin-Yates is your man. Here’s why: 1) you get a human being on the phone, not a message; 2) he shows up pronto; 3) he’ll give you a quote before coming over; 4) he’s a third-generation locksmith; 5) he had a key machine in his room when he was nine; 6) his sons work for him; 7) he has a BA in criminology from SFU and does forensic locksmithing; 8) he’s seen it all, from a priest locked out in his underwear to women in chastity belts. GOT (CAMERA) SKILLS?
Want to outgrow your cameraphone? Take the excellent digital-SLR (single lens reflex) course at Langara College. Program coordinator Greg Blue took the course himself in 1983 and has been teaching there since 1992 (plus freelancing extensively). One-day free intensives run throughout the year; or join a Langara/Holland America cruise to Alaska (May) or the Med (September) for a practical-and tax-free-course. Seventy Percent (70%) Electronic Safe Lockouts Can be Avoided

Seventy percent (70%) of Electronic Safe Lockouts and Electronic Safe Problems can be avoided by just having good quality batteries.

Terry Whin-Yates opening locked Sentry Electronic Data Safe

Mr. Locksmith has some of the newest and modern safe tools to open most  Electronic Lock Fire and Data Safes without or with minimal damage to  the safe door and no damage to the safe contents.

Most Electronic Safe lockouts and problems are a result of dead, failed or cheap batteries.  Replace AA or 9 volt batteries with new Duracell Batteries.  Many of the Electronic safe lockouts I attend, I just replace the batteries.  Sometimes the old batteries have corroded the contacts and I use a special Electronic Jump Box as a power boost to safely open the electronic safe. However, seventy percent (70%) of the lockouts I just replace the batteries.

Save yourself from an electronic safe lockout.  To get the newest and freshest batteries buy from a high volume shop like WalMart.  You can buy other batteries and take your chances but we use only Duracell batteries.

Hi, I’m Terry Whin-Yates from Mr. Locksmith. I have a Rant today. I’ve been dealing with scammer locksmiths for years and also, sometimes legitimate locksmith companies have copied my name, copied my websites, copied my blog, and copied my advertising. I expect it out of scammers, I don’t expect it out of other legitimate locksmiths.

The one main thing I’ve done to protect myself and my company is I have trademarked in North America my company name. As I expand or try to expand, when I get these scammers using my company name on fake addresses, I can deal with them very, very quickly with my trademark.

A few emails and letters off to Google, Facebook, Yelp, legitimate companies, I send them the information that this website or this company is infringing on my trademark. It is dealt with quickly. They remove the website, they remove the data, they remove the images.

So, even if you’re a little guy just starting out, one of the most important things I recommend is trademark your company. It can protect you against the scammer locksmiths. Also, when you get somebody who’s made a mistake and they copied your name because they think it’s cool, you can deal with them. If you have to, you can deal with them through the courts as well. The quick, easy way is your, is get your lawyer on it, give a “Cease and Desist” letter or Court order. It can be expensive but that’s what you have to protect your company.

So again, protect your company against the scammers, also protect it against other companies and get your company trademarked.
