My Lock Picks | Mr. Locksmith™ Maple Ridge

My Lock Picks: Hi, I’m Terry, and I get asked many times, what do I use for picks.

My Lock Picks

Lock Pick Case

When I show up at a job site, I pull this out of my locksmith tools and it’s just a little map expedition case, this is a EDC case. And in it, and this is what I do probably 95% of my picking lockouts, is just, I grab this kit, it’s quick and easy.

Knipex Cobra XS 4″ Plier

And just inside is, I’ll show you what I got here. I have my latest little toy. I have my KNIPEX pliers, and these are handy and they’re narrow enough, sometimes I can get a broken key out of there, but this is for picking. I just grab this. I can have this, if I have to turn it.

Lock Picks

The main tools I use, every single time. So my favorite pick is a hook pick with a diamond. And some of these are Peterson’s, Rytans, whatever. That’s my favorite pick. This one’s a little bit thicker. This one’s a little bit thinner. And I always grab, I prefer a rigid tension wrench, and I also have a flexible one. You see, I bent it. I bend this whichever way I’m going. So these three things right here I’d say open up 90, 95% of the lockouts I have if I have to pick the lock.

Plug Spinner

This is it, very simple. I either use a rigid, a flexible, and a lot of times the locks will pick the wrong way. Well, I’m not gonna re-pick it. I’m gonna use my plug spinner. I call it a flipper, a plug spinner. I have a whole different types of spinners, but this is the one in my case. I have a bigger pick set that I use if I just not picking it.

WD40

And of course I always have a little can of WD-40 I use for picking locks, not for lubricating locks, for helping me to pick it. My friends all use TriFlow and I like using WD-40. I had a lock the other day, it was funny. It was a lockout and it was a Schlage deadbolt, and they can be difficult to pick. And I was having no luck picking it at all. And then I just gave it a little spray of WD-40 and it picked like in 10 seconds. Lubricant is extremely important for picking locks. I always try to pick a lock without using lubricant, and then if I can’t pick it, then I’ll spray it. Some guys will spray it with the lubricant right off the bat, some locksmiths will just spray it right off the bat. I’ve had extreme luck. Sometimes you go there, the lock is just ready to pick, so by the time I apply tension, put the pick in, and it opens. People ask about the technique.

Single Pin Picking

I’ll show you in a couple of videos coming up, but there’s two techniques. There’s the single-pick method, which is the best method, and then there’s raking, which works well. What I do is, I rake the lock, apply tension, I rake the lock a few times and then I’ll single-pin pick it. That seems to work really good for me. Also, don’t be afraid to release tension. I’ll rake it, single-pin pick it, and then I’ll let go. And if I don’t hear click, click, click, it means I haven’t applied proper tension. So one way, instead of just picking away, some people are afraid to release tension, release the tension, then you can see, “Oh, I picked a bunch.” Or if you hear nothing, you don’t hear the pins falling back in, then you know you got bad tension. But back to the point, this is my everyday carry. If I show up a lockout, this is what I have in my kit. Hope you enjoyed the video. Please like and subscribe and stay tuned for more videos coming up. I hope you enjoyed watching this video. Subscribe to my channel. Knipex Cobra XS 4 inch Piler

You hear the expression, especially when it comes to tools, “Cry once when you buy it or cry twice when you have to replace it.” You buy quality tools, you really save yourself a lot of time and money over the long haul. Same thing with key machines. I’ve got key machines that are 35 years old. They work absolutely perfect. They work some better than some of the new ones. That’s another story. But a couple of years ago, I bought the Knipex bolt cutters for cutting screws and tail pieces on locks. And because of that, I’ve now purchased, I’ve gone into the little tiny, probably the most expensive pliers I ever bought, the Knipex a pliers.

Knipex Pliers

This is in my pick kit, my EDC. I’ve replaced my crescent wrench with this little Knipex. With pliers, it’s basically replaced my crescent wrench. I’ll never go back to a crescent wrench. I’m actually now looking at the larger one, I still use a large crescent wrench for when I install with my pit ball, which is another video, when I’m installing latches on steel doors. So I’m gonna get the bigger set and that’ll be the next thing to add And these two tools, I call them channel locks, but they’re actually called water pump locks.

If I got to grab something, these are unbelievable. So this is in my tool case for every day. This is in my backup kit for when I have to do something a little bit more heavy duty. The power of these and the gripping power is unbelievable. I was in the rain the other day and some of my other tools that were getting rusty, my fault, I should have oiled them down. These things still look brand new. I’ve had excellent luck with these.

Knipex Cobra XS 4 inch Piler

Knipex Cobra XS 4 inch Piler

Knipex Cobra XS 4 inch Piler

So I’m extremely happy with my Knipex pliers. Very, very happy. I’m gonna add a few more and you’ll be seeing them in future videos as I’m doing jobs. So these are the very best pliers you can buy. If you look at the Mack Trucks, I think even Snap-On, they’re carrying the nitpicks line in there. I don’t know if they’ve rebranded them, but you can buy these at your, they’re a little bit harder to find at your big box hardware stores ’cause they’re trying to flog their in-house brands. The advantage of buying off of a, I call it the big box trucks, is if something breaks, it’s very easy to do a replacement.

I haven’t had to replace the thing yet, but it’s extremely easy with other Snap-On tools I have, especially my circuit pliers. I tend to break them every couple of years. They just give me a new one. I have some screwdrivers and some Snap-On ratchets and whatnot. If I crack them, they replace them instantly. So I love my Snap-On truck guy and I love the Mack tools guy. That’s the two I like. The tools are good and a lot of them are selling these lines. So it’s just to go in and get a replacement.

Mr. Locksmith™ Maple Ridge

This is the second most little tool I’ve ever bought. It’s a Knipex pliers, it was under $50. Look at the size of this, it’s tiny. It’s extremely strong from what I’ve seen. I bought these for my pick case. I’ll have some stuff showing my little tools that I use for broken keys and whatnot. This is just gonna come in handy for grabbing little bits and pieces. It’s overpriced, yeah, I wanted one and I’ll show you how I put it in my, in my pick case.

How to Rekey Lock Schlage Deadbolt | Mr. Locksmith Maple Ridge

How to Rekey Lock Schlage Deadbolt: A rekey is when the internal mechanism of the lock is rearranged or recoded to match a new set of keys. This is basic security work and every locksmith should be able to do this quickly and affordably. A rekey means that the old keys, including the missing or stolen keys, no longer operate the lock, and a new set of keys will. This is the most efficient way to secure your home.

Kabar Becker BK3 Forced Entry Tool For Law Enforcement? | Mr. Locksmith Maple Ridge

Kabar Becker BK3 Forced Entry Tool For Law Enforcement? | Mr. Locksmith Maple Ridge: The Becker BK3 is a utility knife or a tactical knife.

Kabar Becker BK3 Forced Entry Tool For Law Enforcement | Mr. Locksmith Maple Ridge

The BK3 is a design collaboration between Ethan Becker of BK&T and John Benner of TDI, the Tac Tool smashes, bashes, pries, hammers and cuts. It is equally powerful at lifting stubborn hinge pins, prying open doors or windows, and hammering out glass as it is efficient at cutting 550 cord. A partially serrated edge makes cutting looped and synthetic materials a breeze. MOLLE compatible hard plastic sheath included. Becker Knives “Work for a living”. Made in the USA

The Fixed Blade on the BK3 Becker TacTool by Becker Knife & Tool of KA-BAR® is made from 1095 CRO-VAN Steel and features a Flat grind. 1095 CRO-VAN steel is an easy to sharpen, plain carbon steel used in knife making. Proven to be one of the most popular steels used in KA-BAR Knives

Becker BK3

In this video, I am going to talk about the Becker BK3 or Becker Tac Tool.  It is a utility knife or a tactical knife, whatever you want to call it, we’ll just show you. What does it have to do with locksmithing? Or more importantly, forced entry for police? This does not replace the traditional bars and stuff to bash down doors, get through doors. This is not a covert tool, but it’s a good tool for police to have for if they’re part of a tech tactical team, in my opinion, or if you’re involved with a search, with a search warrant, of course, and you have some minor locks to defeat. So again, we push the covert entry, but this is kind of interesting ’cause just take a look at this. There’s a beast. So this is not an unboxing because I got just the other day I ran across a police unit using one of these and I thought I have to have one and I have to play with it. So I went and bought one. What’s the first thing I do with it? I hack away at a SentrySafe, so we will show that video. So I, a little later, we’ll have a couple of days, but it’s a monster. It’s very, very thick. You know, the handle feels good. This is not a hunting knife. I wouldn’t even call it a camping knife. I’m gonna show three tools that I think are really useful for the average police to have, you know, in the back of your car, in a MOLLE pack. And this is one of three little force tools. So this is the biggest force tool. This does not replace your more traditional police entry tools, which really just copy the firemen. The firemen have fantastic tools for breaching doors. The police have a lot of interesting tools, too. This does not replace the traditional tools. Once you’re inside and you’re running across some interior doors, bedroom doors, bedroom locks, small safes, small drawers, again, it’s a forced entry tool. You can beat on the end if you’ve got a hammer or some stuff. We take a look at it. It’s the Becker BK3. And there are lots of online stores selling it. It’s a great tool. For locksmiths, we’re not gonna show up with this. Sometimes we’re involved in, the police who have already done a forced entry. Then they call us up to open stuff inside. Again, I wouldn’t use it. I can pick the locks.

Locked Out? Call Mr. Locksmith Maple Ridge and we will use our lock picks and not the BK#

So for locksmiths and police could use this, too. Sometimes it’s just quicker, faster. Just cut it off. We have a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel. Super fast. The drill, also known as the rotary pick. We use that. So, but that’s traditional locksmithing tools when we have to step it up. We can’t pick it. We don’t have time to pick it. We can bring in these tools. So would a locksmith use this? Not really. But I have it in my kit just for the fun of it. For police? Yes. And combined with the two other locksmith tools which will have follow-up videos. For in the back of your police car, have it there. Smash out a window? Wow, this is like, we’re gonna go to a wrecking yard. We’re gonna knock out a few windows on cars. This thing just hacks right through them. Very quick. And then clean up the glass, of course. So, a force tool. Interesting. It’s got a knife on the edge. It’s got a pretty sharp edge. You can baton on this. It’s so big. It’s got the chiseled front. This could actually slip. It’s a little bit too thick, but it can actually slip some latches. So if you have a key and knob lock, you could slip it with this. Some small padlocks, you could just hack away at it. Like I said, I took this to a SentrySafe and it’s amazing how well it did. The only part that we, that I don’t really like on this, I would call it the seat belt cutter. It didn’t really cut some seat belts too good. It was okay. There’s better tools for cutting seat belts. This was pretty sharp here and it’s got the segregated blade on it. This chops through rope, wood. Even I took some band steel, some small band steel and just cut it. You can see the finish has held up pretty good considering how bad I treated it. Again, I think this is the weak point for a pry bar. I think it will snap there, but I think you really gotta pull at it to snap it. It’s not gonna just snap. But if I had to do with some of my other tools, which I’ll show ya. I mean, if I have to wedge the door a little bit, put in one of my slip tools to slip the latch back, small deadbolts, it’d probably just pop it back. Desk locks, it’ll open it in seconds. It’s an interesting tool. I like it. It was fun when I saw it in action for the first time and I thought I have to have one of these. So I have it. And I’ll show some more videos with it in use. And I’ll show two more little tools I like to put with this, and which makes it a good all round forced entry tool. Again, not really for locksmiths. Law enforcement’s gonna have a fun time with this. Yes, you have better tools, bigger tools, but for just attach this to your MOLLE pack with the couple extra little tools, and you have yourself a nice little entry kit. Stay tuned for more videos on this in use and a couple more little forced entry tools. I hope you enjoyed watching this video. Subscribe to my channel. Door Reinforcement Deadbolt Lock

Contact us today to have an experienced locksmith assist you with your automotive locksmith situation!

You can see in the video how the door reinforcer goes right around the edge of the door, the back of the door. We have the good, Schlage 600 series deadbolt in there. It’s a commercial grade reinforce door with schlage deadbolt installation. Same locks used in hospitals, schools and Universities and it doesn’t look like a monster lock. It fits in well. Some people like the full plate down here. We never install the deadbolts below the handle, hate it. Deadbolts always go here or higher. This was just, we took out the old Weiser deadbolt, or light-duty deadbolt, we put in a heavy-duty deadbolt. And this will make the door harder to kick in and again some, some people sometimes ill put the full plate. This customer just wanted that plate and again the door is way harder to kick in-

The new Schlage Everest lock system has 6 pins. It’s got the side pin, really hard to pick, hard to bump and difficult to pick. Actually, we don’t have a good time picking these.

There is the plate. You have the 3-inch screw and screw all the way into the stud. It’s a well-built house so it’s got the good frame and now that will make the doorway harder to kick in Door Reinforcement Schlage Deadbolt Lock

The Schlage C123 or S123 key and cylinder is a 6 pin Schlage and very hard to pick open but not impossible. It is not rated as pick-resistant. The one up, Schlage Primus lock is UL rated as pick resistant, drill resistant, but this a perfect Vancouver Special install. A higher quality lock would be the Abloy Protec 2 Deadbolt.

Locksmith Richmond For Sale: Hi, I’m Terry from Mr. LockSmith. I am looking for a Licensee for Mr. LockSmith Richmond, British Columbia. Locksmithing has been absolutely fantastic for me. I raised my family, I’ve had a nice life, I’ve had nice vacations, and it’s all because of locksmithing. Whether we got a good economy, bad economy, we still make money as locksmiths. And unfortunately, even during COVID, we had so many break-ins at night in the city, or everywhere, it was just break-ins like crazy, and mostly commercial break-ins. How to Make Keys to Cars, Automotive ONLINE COURSE

I rented this Volvo and it’s got the keys on a ring and somebody said just keep on twisting it, so I can get them apart, rather than try and cut it or find some pliers. So, I just twist and twist and twist like a figure eight and I got them apart. It is a lot better and I hate it when you rent a car, you have two keys stuck together. If I lose it, I lose ’em both. So, this way, simple. Just keep on twisting it, like a figure eight, ’til they pull apart. You don’t have to run around, trying to find a pair of pliers or anything. You just twist, pull apart. I had a friend, lost two keys, lost his whole set, lost two keys, it cost him $450, cost him over $600 to replace the keys and get them reprogrammed. So, this is a Volvo. This probably costs way more than that. Worst case, I gotta replace one, I don’t have to replace two. I hate that. You rent a car, it comes with that stupid tag, but just twist it, pull it and away we go. We could use a pair of pliers, but this is definitely easier and quicker.

How to Make Keys to Cars, Automotive Locksmith ONLINE COURSE

Open U Lock with a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel.

Open bike lock with a cordless grinder.

I use a Milwaukee Cordless Grinder with a cutting wheel to open most if not all Bike Locks. Just be careful where the sparks go, avoid flammable or plastics that can burn or pit. Wear Gloves and Safety glasses.

One of the best tools in the whole world is a cordless grinder with a cutting wheel. This saves my butt all the time. I could use a big pair of bolt cutters on this, but sometimes I find, when you use the bolt cutter, you can get a piece flying off and it could break a window or something or hurt somebody. I like this, you just have to be aware of the sparks will wreck your shirt. Also, you cannot be by anything flammable or anything plastic or anything glass. So just be really careful when the sparks shoot off of this thing. Usually, I aim the sparks so they go down, usually, it’s okay. So I am just going to cut off this inexpensive bike lock, I am going to use my cordless grinder. I always like to secure whatever I am cutting. I like to secure with a pair of vise grips. Now, wear your safety glasses, I always wear my gloves, just in case. Now, this is interesting. The battery is just a little tiny efficiency one. It is not big enough, not enough amperage, I guess to run the cordless grinder. So I am going to change my, swap my battery out. It’s the first time doing it with a little one. I just thought, “Oh, let’s give it a try.” Yes, look at that and look at, just sucking up the power on this. So I am going to just swap out the battery with a bigger one. I have heard about some people having some trouble with other tools. I have never had a problem with the drill. This is basically double. This is the bigger one. I have never had a problem using this. This is the first time using that. Let’s just swap it out real quick. Full power. And let’s finish it off. There we go. And remember this is hot hot hot. Don’t touch the ends, be careful you don’t burn off the bike. Yes, I could have picked this. It requires a special pick, it’s not that difficult, but I’m a for-profit locksmith. I am not going to make keys to this, it’s disposable. I think they paid 10 bucks for this. It costed more for the service call to get it off, but we didn’t destroy the bike. So, again, you could pick some of these, you could do whatever. My bottom line is I have to get this done fast and efficient and I just cut it off.
